Middle College @ Eastern Kentucky University

Effective University/District Partnerships
  • are deliberately designed; collaborative; advance self-interest; solve common problems (Goodlad, 1988)
  • share goals and objectives and means of achievement (Shive, 1984).
Public school district and local university common problems include a lack of college preparedness and failure to thrive resulting in decreased retention rates, especially for students in the lowest socioeconomic quartile (Cahalan & Perna, 2015). Shared goals and objectives include increased college preparedness, increased success, and increased retention.

MC@EKU

Approximately five years ago, Madison County, Eastern Kentucky University, and Kentucky Department of Education leaders came together to implement a program aimed at increasing equity and access to college for academically capable students who were disengaged or facing challenges/barriers in traditional high school classrooms.
